The Perfect Beverages to Pair with Your Next Holiday Feast

A bottle of wine may be the typical gift to bring to a host, but this is one tradition you don’t have to adhere to.  Wouldn’t it be even better to share a bottle of your own homemade brew instead?   If you use your latest batch of whiskey, rum, vodka, or tequila to create an amazing cocktail, we’re sure your family and friends will appreciate your effort!  Here are some suggestions for crafting the perfect cocktail.

1. Hot Spiced Hard Cider

Who doesn’t enjoy a steaming mug of fresh apple cider that has been steeped with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves?  You can buy pre-packaged mulling spices, or make your own by combining cinnamon sticks with whole cloves and/or nutmegs and you can customize the blend by adding cardamom, star anise, grated ginger, or dried orange peel.  Add the spice mixture to a half-gallon or gallon of cider and simmer on the stove – or in a slow cooker if you need to save the burners for cooking.  This has the added benefit of making your house smell great.  Just before serving, pour some of your special rum, Scotch, whiskey, or brandy into each mug.  Then ladle the hot cider on top and stir.  Be sure to save some without the alcohol for the kids to enjoy!

2. Cranberry Cocktails

Just like cranberry sauce dresses up the Thanksgiving table with its vibrant color, cranberries can add a festive touch to your drinks as well.  Make your own cranberry infused vodka or gin using fresh cranberries from the store or farmer’s market.  Make sure to wash them well first!  Chop or mash them to enhance the flavor, and then add them to your homemade vodka or gin.  Let it stand for at least three days, and then strain before serving.  This makes great cranberry cosmopolitans and cape codders, and you can use it to make your own custom concoctions too.

3. Pumpkin Pie Martini

If you’re too full for dessert, or just want something decadent to drink after dinner, this is the answer!  Add some pumpkin pie spice to equal parts heavy cream and pumpkin puree.  Stir in sugar or simple syrup to taste.  Pour this mixture into an ice-filled martini shaker, and add some homemade rum and vanilla-infused vodka.  Shake well and strain into glasses rimmed with cinnamon sugar.
